Bonded warehouses in India have undergone significant changes in recent times. These facilities are now a key part of the Smart logistics India movement. With advancements in the digital space, they have developed not just in infrastructure but in how they operate. They are evolving from storage units to smart logistics hubs.
What are some of the technological advancements in bonded warehouse practices in India?
1. ICEGATE
One of the most impactful developments has been the digitisation of bonded warehouse processes through ICEGATE (Indian Customs Electronic Gateway).
Earlier, businesses had to navigate tedious paperwork and multiple customs offices. The process was complex and often led to delays in cargo clearance, increased demurrage charges and disrupted supply chains. Businesses can now apply for bonded warehouse licenses entirely online through the ICEGATE platform. All key procedures like registration, submission of supporting documents and bill of entry filing, can be completed digitally. ICEGATE’s integration has made the process much simpler and more transparent.
2. IoT (Internet of Things)
The adoption of the IoT in logistics marks a major leap toward smart logistics.
Warehouse management in India relied heavily on manual processes in the past. Today, the benefits of using IoT in Indian warehouses are evident. Devices like smart sensors, RFID tags and GPS trackers enable real-time inventory tracking, helping monitor goods, warehouse conditions and equipment continuously. On the operational front, Indian logistics firms are integrating IoT with automated Warehouse Management Systems (WMS). This enables faster inventory audits, predictive maintenance of machinery and intelligent space utilisation. Additionally, IoT is being embedded into the government’s digital infrastructure. As global supply chains grow more complex, the need for security in Indian bonded warehouse operations has never been higher. Supply chain transparency is becoming a must. One of the most promising technologies addressing these challenges is blockchain, as it enables end-to-end visibility across the supply chain. Every movement of goods is recorded on a shared ledger that requires authorisation from all stakeholders to be altered. Some Indian ports and logistics startups are using blockchain in the supply chain to speed up approvals, verify documents digitally and minimise fraud.
4. Robotics
India’s logistics landscape is rapidly embracing robotics to boost efficiency. Robotic picking arms, automated sorting systems and smart conveyor belts are being introduced to reduce manual errors and speed up order fulfilment. In some large bonded warehouses near major ports like Mumbai and Chennai, robots are used for stacking and moving goods with minimal human intervention.
