It’s often said that 70% of perception shapes reality, a notion that rings especially true in the logistics industry. Logistics has long been perceived as a male-dominated field, primarily due to the physical demands and rapid pace of supply chain operations. However, this perception is quickly evolving. The rise of digitalization and automation is transforming the logistics and supply chain industry, creating a more inclusive environment where women can excel, particularly in leadership roles.
In 2010, women comprised only 8% of the global logistics workforce, largely due to challenging work conditions and ingrained gender stereotypes. By 2018, that number had risen to 20%, thanks to concerted efforts by companies and governments to promote diversity.
Today, women make up approximately 40% of the global supply chain workforce, yet they remain underrepresented in senior leadership roles. Bridging this gap requires targeted initiatives such as mentorship programs, leadership development, and role redesign to foster a more inclusive environment.
One of the key factors in empowering women in logistics has been the focus on improving work-life balance. Historically, the 24/7 demands of the industry posed challenges, particularly for women managing family responsibilities. However, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the shift toward flexible working arrangements. With companies embracing technology-driven solutions, women are now better equipped to balance both personal and professional commitments without compromising their career progression.
Empowering women in logistics is not just a matter of equality; it’s a business imperative. Diverse leadership teams foster innovation, drive better decision-making, and improve overall business performance.
DahNAY’s Initiatives in Empowering Women in Logistics
When we first started in 2007, there was only one woman in our team. As we’ve grown, we took a conscious step to involve more women, who have brought collaborative and innovative ideas to the table. Workplaces have become safer and more inclusive for everyone. Now, nearly 50 of our employees are women, spanning various positions and designations.
As organisations continue to invest in gender diversity, the logistics industry is poised for a future where women have equal opportunities to excel at every level, breaking down traditional barriers once and for all.
