Bangladesh’s skies are opening up to new opportunities. With cargo flights now connecting the country to global markets, strategic investments and infrastructure development are propelling its logistics sector to new heights. This momentum reflects Bangladesh’s growing role in the China+1 strategy, positioning it as a rising Southeast Asian logistics hub.
Overcoming Challenges: India’s Transshipment Revocation
The revocation of transshipment access by India posed a major challenge to Bangladesh’s logistics operations. But instead of stalling progress, it sparked a proactive response, strengthening air cargo infrastructure and opening new trade corridors. This resilience reflects the country’s determination to build a robust logistics backbone.
Dedicated Cargo Flight: A New Era in Air Freight
In a landmark move, Bangladesh launched its first dedicated cargo flight from Sylhet to Spain, carrying 60 tonnes of readymade garments. This milestone not only enhances regional connectivity but also supports key export sectors, particularly garments and perishables, which contribute 11–13% to GDP.
Regional Trade Shift: Opportunities and Challenges
Bangladesh’s logistics sector is expanding rapidly, fueled by booming e-commerce. With 20–25% annual growth, the surge is driven by rising internet penetration, mobile payments, and a growing middle class, making it one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing e-commerce markets.
At the same time, shifting economic and geopolitical dynamics are reshaping regional trade. Bangladesh is well-positioned to capitalise on this moment, thanks to its strategic location and growing infrastructure. But continued investment and adaptability will be key to maintaining momentum.
Poised for the Future
Recent initiatives, including dedicated cargo flights and air freight infrastructure upgrades, are strengthening Bangladesh’s role in regional supply chains. With the logistics market projected to reach US$84.55 billion by 2029, the sector is on a clear growth trajectory. As trade patterns evolve, Bangladesh is poised to help shape the future of logistics in South and Southeast Asia.
