India’s journey toward becoming a global logistics powerhouse is poised for a major leap with the launch of Vizhinjam Port, the country’s first deep-water container transshipment terminal. Located in the scenic coastal region of Kerala, Vizhinjam Port has been a decade-long vision that has become a reality, with operations officially commenced on December 3, 2024.
Vizhinjam port is strategically located just 10 nautical miles from a key shipping route connecting Europe, the Persian Gulf, and the Far East. Its position along the East-West trade axis provides easier access for large vessels. Vizhinjam is poised to emerge as a prominent global hub.
Jet-Speed Growth Ahead
Vizhinjam Port efficiently transforms large transshipment containers into smaller vessels, making it adaptable to various routes. This capability will support the port’s fast-paced growth and increasing demand.
The Next phase
The port is steadily redefining India’s maritime future, demonstrating exceptional performance during the test run by handling five big shipments. It promises enhanced port infrastructure for Indian exporters. Going further, the construction of phases 2 and 3 will increase Vizhinjam port’s container handling capacity to 4.87 million TEUs, creating a greater opportunity in India.
Building new ways
In addition, initiatives to improve the major routes to the port are taking place. The Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) is leading a comprehensive development plan, linking Vizhinjam to Kollam and Punalur. This initiative aims to establish an efficient, interconnected industrial corridor that seamlessly complements port operations, including roadway and railway logistics transportation to the port.
Inviting Investors
The recent Premier Investment Hub Conclave at Vizhinjam marked a significant milestone, drawing together industry leaders, investors, and innovators to explore the opportunities the port offers. The conclave underscored Kerala’s growing potential as an investment destination, with discussions covering everything from startup support to large-scale industrial investments.
The port’s development is expected to benefit Indian importers and exporters from micro, small, and medium enterprises. This also creates various job opportunities for the locals.
Mr. Murali, the founder of DahNAY, shared his insights on the developments, emphasizing the significance of the Vizhinjam Port Conclave 2025. He stated, “Participating in the Vizhinjam Port Conclave 2025 means being part of a transformation.” Highlighting the port’s potential, he added, “Vizhinjam is not just a port; it is a vision of possibilities, creating endless opportunities.”
Considering its impact on India and global logistics, Vizhinjam Port serves as a catalyst for growth, inclusion, and global competitiveness. By unlocking immense opportunities for Indian exporters and importers, it is paving the way for India to emerge as a leading global logistics hub.
